Abstract

This study extends research on Argentine economic growth back to the early years of pastoral activity from 1825 to 1865. Rapid expansion of Argentina's economy in this early period was linked to increased demand for pastoral products in world markets. Pastoral Argentina followed a development path characterized by labor accumulation in the mid nineteenth century, in contrast to a development path dominated by capital accumulation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
