Abstract
The relation between amyloidosis and monoclonal immunoblobulins and/or Bence Jones (BJ) proteins has been the subject of extensive study in the past. In 1974, on the basis of the finding of high frequency of BJ proteins in the urine among patients with amyloidosis, we postulated that amyloidrelated monoclonal immunoglobuline and BJ proteins may be autoantibodies or fragments of autoantibodies directed against normal tissue constituents. The purpose of this paper is to review subsequent studies of the immunoglobulins in 130 cases of amyloidosis associated with plasma cell dyscrasia (PCD). A comparison was introduced regarding classes and types of monoclonal immunoglobulines from patients with amyloidosis with PCD and from patients with myeloma or macroglobulinemia. There is also a comparison of the frequency of monoclonal immunoglobulins in this study between Japanese patients (Kobe series) and American patients (New York series).
