Abstract
Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) is a supplement used in clinical nutrition (oral, enteral or parenteral) in the treatment of malnutrition and belonging to the immuno-pharmaconutrient family. Animal models and clinical studies indicate that stimulation of anabolic hormone secretion (insulin and growth hormone) by OKG appears prominent, in addition to the production of OKG metabolites possessing anticatabolic, anabolic and/or immuno-stimulant properties : arginine, glutamine, proline and polyamines. In clinical nutrition, OKG has been successfully used in the treatment of catabolic diseases (severe burn) and in malnourished elderly patients. Several studies also provide evidence that OKG enhances wound healing, suggesting its use in burn patients, bed sores and during reconstructive surgery. OKG has been proposed during cancer cachexia and in some paediatric patients, but data remain scarce. The use of supplements such as OKG could lead to a significant improvement in the care of hospitalised or ambulatory patients suffering from malnutrition.
