Abstract
Abstract This discussion of the large Lakalai dialect group of New Britain focuses attention on patterns of co‐residence and co‐operation, with special reference to leadership and social control. The main bases of leadership are age, wealth or control of wealth, knowledge, industry, magical power, and ability in warfare; and the processes through which men achieve prestige, obtain adherents and assume authority are examined in some detail. Seniority is seen as fundamental in this society. Elders institutionally dramatize their authority, impressing upon the community the power that lies behind it. This traditional political organization has relevance also in the present‐day situation.
