Abstract
LaIrSi 3, which has a molecular weight of 415.37, is tetragonal with space group 14 mm and a = 4.282(1) A ̊ , c = 9.838(2) A ̊ , V = 180.4(1) A ̊ 3 , Z = 2, D x = 7.64 g cm −3, λ(Mo Kα) = 0.71069 Å, μ(Mo Kα) = 492 cm −1 and T=293 K. The structure was determined using a single crystal and was refined to an R value of 0.031 with 241 independent reflections. LaIrSi 3 with the BaNiSn 3-type structure is a ternary derivative of the BaAl 4 type. It is compared with the two other BaAl 4-type derivatives found in the same ternary system, i.e. the high and low temperature modifications of LaIr 2Si 2 which have CaBe 2Ge 2 and ThCr 2Si 2 structures respectively.
