Abstract

In October 2007, municipal plebiscites were held in three Ladin communities of the Province of Belluno (Region of Veneto, Italy) on the proposal to join the Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol (Region of Trentino Alto Adige-South Tyrol) where minority languages are provided wider legal protection. The initiative stirred up different reactions at regional and national level, while it corresponded to modern principles of European minority protection. The results brought an overwhelming majority (more than 80%) in favour of a union with South Tyrol.
