Abstract

As if by magic, debates have died down about where real men—as well as real women—have gone, both in life and in literature. The usual accusations of immoral behavior leveled at literary heroines also no longer appear on the printed page. Or have their morals improved? The question of who is more in need of being cared for has apparently also been settled once and for all. That is to say, a subject that not so long ago caused minds to ferment turbulently has been completely forgotten. The reason is understandable: works of such historic, ideological, and artistic import have been—and are—published that one recalls some of the profound arguments as naive childhood dreams.
