Abstract

A one-step, chelation-assisted sp3 C-H bond activation strategy is reported for the synthesis of isobenzofuran-1(3H)-ones (n = 0) and 3,4-dihydroisochromen-1-one (n = 1) from ortho-alkyl-substituted benzoic acids in moderate to good yields. The reaction may be carried out under Pd(II)- and Pt(II)-catalyzed conditions in the presence of an oxidant. However, a catalyst loading of 10-30 mol% is required.
