Abstract

Lactoferrin (LF) has been reported to exert beneficial effects on bone health, however, the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. Here, we used antibody array to explore the growth factors and cytokines secretion profile in LF-stimulated MC3T3-E1 cell as well as low-density lipoprotein receptor related protein 1 (LRP1) stable knockdown cell. We detected 83 growth factors and cytokines secreted by LF-treated osteoblast, and the levels of Thrombospondin-2 (THBS-2), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Fibroblast growth factor-basic (FGF-basic), Cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61 (Cyr61), Serine protease inhibitor (Serpin) E1, Monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) and Platelet-derived growth factor AA (PDGF-AA) were up-regulated while the Serpin F1 was down-regulated. LF receptor LRP1 only partially involved in LF’s effect on THBS-2 and FGF-basic. This study will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms by which LF exert beneficial effects on bone cells through the orchestration of cytokines and growth factors network.
