Abstract

We describe physical properties of several types of liquid crystalline (LC) compounds based on three-phenyl ring molecular core connected to a lactate unit. We analyse advantageous aspects of the lactate group utilization as a chiral moiety in a design of new rod-like LC materials. For selected types of molecular core we have discussed the length influence of both chains (chiral and non-chiral), character of linkage group between the molecular core and the non-chiral alkyl chain, the effect of a lateral substitution, effect of a linkage group and/or modification of the phenyl/biphenyl position in the molecular core. Comparison of several series of LC compounds has been done with the aim to establish the relationship between the molecular structure and physical properties.
