Abstract

After diathermy of the ciliary body and additional intravenous glucose infusions the aqueous humour and the cornea stroma were analysed for lactate and pyruvate levels in 48 rabbit eyes. Complete circular diathermy induced a significant increase of the lactate and the lactate pyruvate ratios in the aqueous humour, the central and peripheral cornea stroma. After i.v. glucose infusions the lactate levels were reduced only partly. However, the lactate-pyruvate ratios were decreased to normal values in each of the compartments analysed, due to an increase of the pyruvate levels. Since the i.v. infusion did not raise the cornea glucose level, the reason for the decrease of the lactate-pyruvate ratio was interpreted to be different from nutritional effects.
