Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, pruritic skin disease with increasing incidence (Mathiesen and Thomsen, 2019). Although AD is classically thought of as a pediatric disease, recent studies have shown high rates of disease in adults as well, with a prevalence in Europe between 2.2% and 17.6% (Kowalska-Olędzka et al., 2019). There is a growing body of evidence that sex hormones play a role in the complex interplay of ADs pathophysiology, influencing immunological pathways and the skin (Kanda et al., 2019).
