Abstract

The effects of quinidine on divalent mineral absorption were studied using normal and high potassium intraruminal buffers with the in vivo isolated washed rumen technique. A concentration of 1 mmol litre-1 quinidine in the intraruminal buffer decreased the absorption rates of Na + and Cl − from the rumen but had no significant effect on the absorption rates of Mg 2+, Ca 2+ and K +. Prolonged oral administration of quinidine had no significant effect on the absorption of any of these ions from either a normal or a high potassium ruminal solution.
