Labour and housing markets in inner city regeneration

Abstract

Abstract London and Liverpool have dockland development schemes in close proximity to areas of minority settlement. In London the LDDC and the City are creating pressure upon the Bangladeshi community in Spitalfields. This is exacerbated by the process of gentrification. Tower Hamlets has traditionally regarded the Spitalfields Bangladeshis as a problem to be dealt with through immigration control. The Liverpool docklands project has so far had virtually no effect upon the local black population. The development of the inner city areas and the expansion of higher educational institutions and a hospital, in the view of sections of the black community, threaten to create similar pressures to Spitalfields. Liverpool city council, with a long tradition of ignoring the needs of the black population is now pursuing policies of consultation and participation.
