Children 6 months to adolescents 18 years old who were referred to the study institution for outpatient evaluation of hypochromic microcytic anemia were included. Those with a known hematologic diagnosis or a chronic disease were excluded. Complete blood cell counts, serum iron levels, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin levels, transferrin levels, and a peripheral smear were obtained from all participants.
