Abstract

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) on Long Island, is the largest facility for basic nuclear physics research in the United States. Operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), it serves well over 1,000 international users. The collider itself, and its two major detectors, PHENIX and STAR, began operations in 2000 and have been steadily improved and upgraded each year since. Two smaller detectors, PHOBOS and BRAHMS, completed their missions in 2005 and 2006, respectively. To date, RHIC experiments have produced over 300 refereed papers with more than 20,000 citations, over 200 Ph.D.s, and a number of major scientific awards and accelerator technology innovations.
