Abstract

The aim of this paper is to review the existing literature regarding the current methods used to diagnose bitch mastitis. Compared to the information available on ruminant mammary gland inflammation, the data regarding bitch mastitis is limited. So far microbiology assays are most widely used to identify, (based on antibiograms) and to treat mammary gland infections. Milk cytology has also been taken into consideration as a diagnostic tool. Clinicians have also started to use haematology, biochemistry and pH assays to confirm clinical signs of mastitis. It is well known that one of the causes of neonatal mortality is undiagnosed episodes of mastitis. Early diagnosing of subclinical cases of glandular tissue inflammation and avoiding chronic episodes of infection, can limit neonatal mortality.
