Abstract
The medical officers who served in the division of infectious diseases in laboratories of the United States Army during the war of 1917-1918 may remember the first edition of "Laboratory Methods of the United States Army," published in 1918. This was a small pocket manual of 256 pages, a true vade mecum for the laboratory worker. This fifth edition, of 823 pages, each of which is double the size of the page of the first edition, is a comprehensive laboratory manual. It is dedicated to the memory of Dr. George M. Sternberg, who was Surgeon General of the United States Army during the last decade of the nineteenth century. The editors have enlisted the services of twenty-three contributors, all of them either officers in the army or closely related as consultants in special fields.
