Abstract

Recent development in lighting system enable the use of Light Emitting Diode (LED) as one of the lighting system instead of fluorescent and others, because of its energy saving characteristic. Lighting system that operates with AC supply produced harmonic. Current solution to improve harmonic is by using active filter. This research revealed new approach to solve the problem where compact LED lamp directly connected to DC supply without using converter. It is relevant to study the performance between compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and compact LED lamps. Laboratory experimental have been set up for CFLs and compact LED lamps to measure the data during the operation for both of the lamps such as voltage, current, power, power factor, harmonics, temperature and luminance. For compact LED lamps, the experiments are executed for two type of supply which are AC and DC supplies, where compact LED lamps that operates with AC consists of converter while compact LED lamps that operates with DC does not have converter. The analysis focuses more on the efficiencies of the lamps. This research suggests that compact LED lamps is better than CFL, cause it is driven by the cost savings.
