Laboratory exercises for a graduate/undergraduate course in human-computer interaction

Abstract

A graduate/undergraduate course in Human-Computer Interaction is offered jointly by the Psychology and Industrial Engineering Departments at the University of Illinois. The course was first offered five years ago in a lecture/discussion format. However, it soon became obvious that an HCI course without a laboratory/practical section was about as useful as medical training without clinical practice. Therefore, the second time the course was offered it contained a laboratory component which included both theoretically--based empirical research within the confines of the "formal" laboratory as well as field research. The purpose of this note is to share some of the laboratory exercises and discussion outlines that we have developed.
