Abstract

ABSTRACT In this research study, the effect of pavement surface temperature on skid resistance of different asphalt mixtures has been investigated. Four types of asphalt mixtures including Hot Mix Asphalt, Stone Mastic Asphalt, Steel Slag, and Porous asphalt were heated to different temperatures and their respective skid resistance values were measured, using a British Pendulum Tester. In order to evaluate the effect of heating method on skid resistance variations of asphalt mixtures, two heating sources including water bath and oven were used. Results indicate that skid resistance of studied asphalt mixtures decreases as surface temperature increases. Also, type of heating method has no significant effect on the skid resistance variations. In addition, based on experimental results, equations are proposed to describe the relation between skid resistance of different asphalt mixtures and surface temperature.
