Abstract

Summary 1 To obtain the highest possible parasitization of eggs of Eurygaster integriceps Put. by Hadronotus carinatus Masner, freshly laid host eggs are necessary, also daily feeding of the wasps with aqueous sugar solution (14%). 2 The greater part of the host eggs is parasitized by fertilized H. carinatus females in the first four days. If several batches of host eggs are available at the same time, at least 68 (maximum 90) eggs are parasitized by each female. If the host eggs are available at intervals of 1–2 days, then 86–107 eggs, or 6.5–8 batches could be successfully parasitized by each female. In mass rearing each Hadronotus female can be reckoned as equivalent to 5 parasitized egg masses. 3 Fertilized females produce mainly (approx. 90%) females, unfertilized females produce only males. 4 Development of parasitized eggs takes 21–23 days at 18–24°C, 16–20 days at 22–25°C. 5 Successful parasitism of Eurygaster eggs by H. carinatus is only possible in the first third of the normal development time of the host eggs.
