Abstract

This chapter deals with labor migration in the Mekong region. Thailand faces a labor shortage in specific low-skilled industries, on the other, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar face unskilled labor surplus due to rural poverty, underdeveloped infrastructure, and low or poor quality education. Thus, migrants flow from countries that have been slow in economic progress and lack employment opportunities to those with a labor deficit due to economic growth. Given their difficult situation, civil societies in the Mekong region have been demonstrating through movements and calling for the protection and support of migrant workers. Cambodia is both a sender and receiver of migrant labor. Thailand is the primary destination for Cambodians, while Cambodia is home to a large number of Vietnamese migrants. There is an increasing number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that support migrant workers in Cambodia. In Yunnan Province, some NGOs conduct activities to protect migrants.
