Abstract

Labial fusion is a common paediatric gynecological problem. The condition occurs most commonly in girls between three months and four years of age and has a peak incidence between 13 and 23 months. Labial fusion is considered an acquired condition secondary to hypoestrogenism and vulvovaginitis. Most children are asymptomatic. Labial fusion is a predisposing factor for asymptomatic bacteriuria and urinary tract infection. Resolution occurs with topical application of an estrogen cream. After separation of the labia minora, a nonpharmacological ointment should be applied daily for at least one month to prevent readhesion.
