Until 15 years ago the density of physicians in France was increasing only slightly (Figure 1). Medical school was, and continues to be, a 7-year curriculum after granting of the baccalaureate. An examination at the end of the first year determined how many students could continue, but selection of students was not based on a fixed number of positions available.In the late 1960s, however, events occurred that led to considerable stress on the system of medical education.
