Abstract

While there have been profound upheavals in the life of the couple, the difference in age between the partners, seen as a mark of inequality between men and women, remains unchanged. The author looks back at its origin and its repercussions on the forming of couples. While women's aspirations, which are limited by society, seem determining at the time when the couple is first formed and then its eventual break-up, male aspirations, matching those of younger women combine, in the formation of second couples, to eliminate older women from the marriage market. The last phase of life will thus be more solitary for women, particularly as men's lower life expectancy is added to these other factors. The influence of women's social position in the forming of her aspirations concerning the life of the couple makes it possible nevertheless to envisage possible evolutions.
