Abstract

We try to characterize the intuition that there is a vital power inherent to reality by which many collective projects and transformations are promoted. We propose that such power may be termed “desire”. In this, we will use various concepts born within the reflection about Monadology and Sociology of Gabriel Tarde. We concentrate on isolating, in a theoretical way, the principles related to the processes of harmony and variation so we can compose a coherent formula about desire to understand societies and their processes. Tarde´s reflection is linked to his own view and knowledge on sociology and the scientific advances of his time, so we use some resources (footnote, praecautio, excursus and addendum) to insinuate the current reach of some assertions. In the conclusions, we summarize the paper regarding a theoretical characterization concerning social physics, greed, difference, sociability and of course, desire.
