Abstract

Summary A phytosociological study of a remarkable assemblage of continental sandy dunes in Bitcherland (Northern Vosges Mountains) identified two vegetation associations: Spergulo-Corynephoretum, a very open group, associated with poor, xerophilic convex zones, Diantho-Armerietum, a more closed vegetation group, associated with less arid concave zones where there is an accumulation of mineral elements. The floristic composition, the ecological characteristics and the biogeographical affinities of these two groups are first studied. The methods of conservation of these continental sandy dunes and their original flora (Helichrysum arenarium, Botrychium matricariifolium and Armeria elongata, three protected species in France) are then envisaged.
