Abstract

Post-communist transition in Romania, This article describes the various phases of post-Communist transition in Romania, from the revolution of December 1989 to the country’s accession to the European Union in January 2007. The analysis focuses on the roles played by the range of political, economic and social figures who led the country through the 1990s and on the political reforms enacted up to the present time. The analysis of the country’s internal transformation is placed in continuous comparison with parallel process of negotiation for European accession - in which the author himself played a leading role - thus underlining the close intertwining of the internal and external dimensions in the country’s social transformation.
