Abstract

Jan JOOSTEN : The Syriac Tradition of the Gospel Text and the Question of the «Aramaic Substratum ». The Syriac witnesses of the gospel text contain a number of elements that do not reflect the Greek text but appear to go back to a primitive, Aramaic, stage of the tradition of the words and acts of Jesus. These reading, it seems, are the last traces of a Palestinian Aramaic tradition used by the Jewish-Christian missionaries who stand at the beginning of the Eastern Church (before AD 150). Where these elements can be identified, on linguistic and textual grounds, they are apt to contribute to the study of the « Aramaic substratum » of the gospels.
