AbstractSyphilis is a chronic sexually transmitted infection, strictly human, characterized by various clinical manifestations and long latency periods, caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum pallidum, it can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Syphilis is diagnosed using treponemal and non-treponemal serologic tests, nucleic acid amplification tests (TAAN). If left untreated, primary syphilis can progress to the secondary, latent, and tertiary stages of the disease. Of the four stages of syphilis, three are infectious: primary, secondary, and early latent syphilis. Treatment is based on the early administration of penicillin.
