Abstract

This essay analyses Los agravios satisfechos y visperas sicilianas, an apocryphal comedy by Calderon de la Barca, whose subject is the anti-French rebellion that took place at Palermo in 1282. The comparison between the literary text and some historical studies has allowed the identification of possible sources used by the author. On the other hand, the manipulation of History, in addition to the anachronisms related to some events of the third and fourth decade of the XVII century (France’s declaration of war on Spain in 1635, 1640 Catalan revolt and the Pact of Ceret, 1641 conspiracy in Andalusia), led us to establish the date of the Golden Age comedy and to identify the goals pursued by the playwright: to turn the Sicilian Vespers into a foundation myth of the Monarchy in Spain, using them as an anti-French symbol and, at the same time, to criticize the «restoring reformism» that the Count-Duke Olivares undertook.
