Abstract

SUMMARY. — I explain the structure of the Géométrie, and I defend the thesis that the aim of Descartes' s treatise was to provide a method for the art of geometrical problem solving as it was practiced in his time. To illustrate this art I discuss the solution by Clavius of a problem characteristic of the art. I then argue that geometrical problem solving required a twofold method. On the technical level an analytical procedure was needed which would lead the geometer to the solution of a problem. On the methodological side an answer was required to the question : which constructions were acceptable in geometry? Descartes provided both the procedure and the answers. The structure of his treatise was largely determined by its aim as formulated above.
