Abstract

Sexuality and confessors in the Modem Period. Sexuality is less of a preoccupation among confessors than has been ascertained. The Church's morality is based on simple criteria : it recognizes the « sexual » instinct, but only accepts it as lawful within the confines of marriage and on condition thai it does not contravene the procreative purpose of the sexual act. The seriousness of a sexual sin is determined by a « scale » of possible cases, more or less aggravated depending on the circumstances, and the severity of the school of moral theology to which the confessor adheres. What causes most concern about « sexual matters » and hence the ambiguousness of pleasure, is that it opens wide the doors to passion and therefore insanity.
