Abstract

This article is a story-connected exercise, illustrated by the English cotton industry, spearhead of the first Industrial Revolution. The development of this industry has been attributed sometimes to internal factors, other times to external factors. The exercice involves the broadest possible framework for analysis focusing on the relationship between these two factors.
