Abstract

The article explores the literary representation of the nomadic living-wagon by comparing its significance in the auto-representational œuvres of the sintizze Philomena Franz and Sandra Jayat, as well as in the hetero-representational work of Alain-Fournier. The works emphasise the architectural dimension of the mobile houses as “dual machines” to the detriment of their practical usage as a means of transport. However, the dynamic nature of the roulotte is bestowed on the inhabitants during their stays at stopping places. The protagonists thus embark on inner journeys which, through their continuity with the mobile nomadic home, become transformative.
