Abstract

This paper aims to consider both the number and the role played by the churches and monasteries of Jerusalem between the second half of the 7th and the begin of the 11th century, that is to say the Early Arab period. Such an analysis of ecclesiastical buildings still active during those years, reveals the phenomenon of a significant crisis which occurred in the Jerusalem diocese and its relationship with the inhabitants of the towns, villages and rural settlements nearby.
