Abstract

Popular religiosity -also called popular piety, even though the expressions are not exactly synonymous- is a topic which is always current and of great importance in the life of the Church. While on the one hand we have to affirm that the liturgy is certainly the summit and the source of spiritual life, on the other hand popular religiosity is a manifestation of people's faith, is rich in values and should not be underestimated. This article takes as its reference the Directory on Popular Piety and Liturgy of the Congregation for Divine Worship and develops the different elements which shape popular religiosity: anthropological aspects, the Christian vales involved and the repercussion which it has on liturgical celebration and pastoral praxis in the life of dioceses and parishes. The end purpose is to seek harmonisation between liturgy and popular religiosity, always subordinating the later to the former; always looking for harmony rather than substitution or confrontation, thus helping pastors to evaluate and co-ordinate these initiatives properly.
