Abstract

Mentoring is a learning strategy in use by a growing number of organizations that could lead to many potential benefits. This paper presents the current state of scientific literature and praxis on mentoring so that programs could be designed on empirical facts: what is the optimal profile of protégé-mentor dyads; what are the characteristics of effective programs; what are the contextual factors influencing mentoring success; what are the costs and benefits of mentoring for the protégé, the mentor and the organization. Based on evidences reviewed, recommendations are proposed.
