Abstract

abstract : Some neuropathological cases are characterized by an perturbation in the identification and knowledge that is specific to some categories of objects, especially those of animals and food. I review these cases as well as the analyses that have been put forward to explain them. The conclusions I wish to draw are of two kinds : first, it is likely that sensory channels are involved in the shaping and partitioning of the semantic memory ; second, language and perception strongly interact in the process of identification of objects. The concept of functional system elaborated by Luria may condense the conclusions I have come to, and serves me to develop some philosophical consequences of the studies I discuss in this paper.
