Abstract

Aristotle seems to have set up his logic of the with reference to the linguistic habit, i.e., the superficial impression that predications are defined in the Topics with reference to their logical form alone is false. It can be shown that Aristotle had become aware of this in the Prior Analytics and that he had adjusted his definition of the  to this. The article ends with some tentative remarks as to how these insights could shed new light on the system of predicables as a whole.
