Abstract
The Vosges mountain range is a region rich in history with an extraordinary memorial diversity. Between 1870 and 1945, there were three major conflicts, first between France and Germany, which then spread to all the other nations. This conflict would generate specificities that would transform these mountains into exceptional stages for European history in general and French history in particular. Indeed, the French-German war of 1870-1871 resulted in a border dividing the range in two along its north-south axis, transforming Alsace-Moselle into a German province. From that moment, the partitioning of the region, the border passes, and the monumentalisations imbued with revengeful nationalism would rhythm the entire range while a number of Optants” (residents of Lorraine who left the German province to maintain their French nationality) would modify the social and economic structure of a Lorraine that was profoundly affected territorially
