Abstract

In this article Aquinas' thesis on the impossibility of knowing the Essence of God is studied. It is proposed that it should not be interpreted simply that one cannot know the Essence of God perfectly, but that his Essence remains absolutely unknown, i.e. not even partially or imperfectly known, at the end of our rational enquiry. This does not, however, imply that the man who investigates the nature of God only with his rational efforts should be condemned to silence. In fact, one can say something true on God, in so far as one can attribute to Him the perfections found in creatures, perfections that preexist in Him eminently. Such attribution, however, does not imply a partial knowledge of the Essence of God.
