Abstract

The standard biographies of Albert Schweitzer hardly speak of his preaching. However, the sermons he gave between 1898 and 1912 reveal a conscientious and enthusiastic preacher. Centred on the theme of the Kingdom of God, his preaching calls the believer to ethical action in the areas of overseas missions and of social (even political) action in Europe. Allying simplicity and profundity and rooted in the message of Jesus, his sermons are also characterised by their literary quality, as seen in his sermon of 8 March 1903 translated as an annex.
