Abstract

The situation of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the countries of the Southern Cone affects not only that subregion but the entire hemisphere, the use of the Armed Forces, specifically the Armed Forces in mitigating it, can be a way to boost economic activity, and strengthening the collective security system. This article analyzes the phenomenon from the perspective of Multidimensional Security, referring to the characteristics of the phenomenon as a transnational organized crime. From a Political Economy for Defense and Security approach, it is observed how illegal fishing is presented as an opportunity cost dilemma for governments. However, the cooperative effort in security and defense against illegal fishing requires the Inter-American System of International Relations to strengthen the agreements and achieve a collective commitment to combat this scourge. Demonstrated the effect that the collective employment of the Armed Forces can cause. It is concluded that fighting illegal fishing that the potential benefits are to impact on the entire hemisphere.
