Abstract

The Word became flesh and set up his tent among us. Reflections on the theology of the Fourth Gospel. The fundamental paradox of christology, as it is formulated in John 1, 14, is developed throughout the Fourth Gospel in a narrative shape much more organized, and less anecdotical, than that of the Synoptics. The period of the incarnation is related in a tragic account terminating in the elevation of the Son of God on the cross, which is at the same time his return to the Father. This tragedy, however, is integrated in the divine plan for salvation, for it makes possible, firstly, the recruitment of a number of disciples charged to continue the work of the Master, and secondly the sending of the Paraclete, who will lend the testimony of the disciples universal scope and efficiency.
