Abstract

This article revisits the concept of “bouffée délirante” (“delirious flash” or “acute delirious puff”) introduced in 1886 by Valentin Magnan, as well as the main developments of this specifically French nosographic entity. The features and the trace of this clinical entity are first identified in the field of classical psychiatry and then in the field of contemporary semiology, both French and international. In a second step, this article proposes a reading of the acute delirious puff with regard to the feeling of the uncanny and its destinies. The emergence of manifestations of the uncanny is consubstantial with the occurrence of subjective changes. Under this prism, the delirious whiff is examined as a paradigmatic but not exclusive expression of the adolescent process, as well as at the beginning of a moment of disymbolisation-resymbolisation of the unconscious processes of thought.
