Abstract

The growth of intensive aviculture in the district of Lamballe (Côles-du-Nord) came before that of intensive pig breeding wich is improving very quickly thanks to the influence of a group of producers free from food makers and slaughter houses. In the parish of Hénanbihen the density of intensive breeding is such that the land structures are deeply changed. The farms only produce a very little part of the necessary food to intensive breeding. Farming is over simplified. Only barley is grown as well as Indian corn which appears more and more. The milch cows are replaced by young cattle that are bred for the meat. Intensive breeding allows the small farms to survive and reduces the depopulation of the country. The landscape itself is changed by the huge stock- farms built near the farm. The author suggests « agro-industrial » to qualify both these structures and landscape, half way between traditional countryside and modern industry.
