Abstract
The Bourges area is rich in traces of roman ironworking, many of which were identified in the 19h century. Research carried out for a (University) doctoral thesis has permitted a reassessment of this activity in the area of the Civitas capital. The systematic use of aerial photography, toponymy, field-walking and other methods has defined a concentration of relevant sites in the Allogny region, considerably altering the emphasis in their distribution within the Bourges area. The comparison of these results with Caesar's account of the siege of Avaricum and the study of inscriptions relating to iron mining has suggested some new hypotheses concerning the reasons for this concentration and on its legal status.
