Abstract

The words of Jn 12, 32 prophesy the humiliation and glorification of Christ on the Cross. His love, manifested in this way, attracts all of mankind. St. Josemaria understands the Johannine text in an original way. He takes it to mean that the Cross is raised up in the world and attracts humankind whenever a Christian performs his ordinary work in a holy way. Jn 12, 32 is also traditionally interpreted in relation to Christian worship, particularly to the Eucharist. In this sense, ordinary work and worship meet: both are God’s work; prayer; sacrifice; apostolate. An authentic «liturgy of work» may be said to derive from the idea of Christian self-oblation.
